I'On was planned under the direction of Vince Graham and designed by Dover, Kohl and Partners and Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company, two of the most respected names in New Urbanist town planning in the United States. The community's 20 mile per hour speed limit, curved streets with trees close to the curb, compact lots, front facing porches, and concentration of public spaces were all deliberate design choices intended to encourage pedestrian activity and neighborly interaction. I'On was controversial when proposed and required a South Carolina Supreme Court ruling in the I'On Company's favor before development could proceed.

Two Lakes, Twelve Parks, Six Miles of Trails

I'On's public spaces are among the most generous of any neighborhood in Mount Pleasant. Two lakes, twelve parks, an outdoor amphitheater, a boathouse, six miles of walking trails, and approximately two miles of marshfront hiking trails give residents a network of outdoor spaces that is genuinely integrated into the fabric of the neighborhood.
